It is only a preliminary round game, but what a huge upset victory for the United States over Canada yesterday. Even if you’re not a hockey fan, if you tuned into that game you would not have been been disappointed. It had everything you want to see in a game. Hitting, speed, goals, great goal tending, well at least by Ryan Miller. Broduer… not so much. It was the type of game that may get more Americans to start paying attention to hockey. I don’t know how any American supporters could not have enjoyed that game yesterday. Ryan Kesler’s, who plays in Vancouver for the Canucks during the NHL season, scored quite possibly the greatest empty net goal I have ever seen. He out hustled Corey Perry to the puck and used his left arm to backhand the puck in the net from about 45 feet away. I don’t think the Canadians were prepared for the speed and toughness displayed by the Americans.
The Americans, who finished 1st out of 12 nations in the preliminary rounds, now will face must win situations from here on out to advance for a chance at a medal.
