Overtime Rule Change

Manning walks off the field after an overtime loss

It is disappointing to see the NFL give in and change the sudden death overtime rule. I always liked and thought it was unique that the NFL was the only football league at any level willing to end the game the first time a team scores. The change gives both teams opportunity to posses the ball, as long as a touchdown is not scored on the opening drive. If a defense can’t stop a team from scoring when it absolutely has to, they don’t deserve to win.

The weird thing about this change is that for now at least, it that the rule change only applies to playoff games. I guess that is what happens with league darlings like Peyton Manning and Brett Favre fail to win playoff games in overtime. Owners will meet again in may to decide whether or not to adopt the change for the regular season.

If the rule is going to be changed, it needs to be changed for the entire season, not just the playoffs. The NHL has a different overtime system in the playoffs than in the regular season, but that is only because they know that playoff games shouldn’t be decided in a best of three shoot out.

Football is already a tough and exhausting enough game to play for 60 minutes, extending the overtime periods could deteriorate the quality of play, and increase the risk of injury to the players.

What is wrong with some Chelsea fans

The drama between John Terry and Wayne Bridge finally came to an end today (well atleast it should of) when the two met at Stamford bridge, it seems god, faith, karma or whatever deity you believe in seems to with “Team Bridge”. As Man City came out on top 4-2 thanks to two goals each from Carlos Tevaz and Craig Bellamy (two main none not strangers to controversy).

This whole situation was being built up though as if it was some sort of wrestling match, with this whole storyline but like most things that are built up it didn’t live up to the hype. The first glance between the two competitors was at the pre game handshakes were Bridge refused to shake Terry’s hands but no there were no blows as Bridge got substitute by Manchini with 15 minutes left and the game wrapped up leaving the press dissatisfied regardless the handshake or lack there of is located below, until the Premier Leagues get it taken down as to copyright as usual, clips of premier league games are more guarded than fort knox.

World Cup 2010 kits made from recycled bottles

Yes those kits sported by ten of the worlds eh greatest average players are made out of entirely recycled bottles, A lot of people have been highly anticipating the new kits that Nike created for the World Cup in South Africa but i don’t think anyone expected this. When i first heard this all i could picture was KAKA running around covered in lucozade wrappers but the below article removed my concerns.

For the first time, all of Nike

USA upsets Canada!

It is only a preliminary round game, but what a huge upset victory for the United States over Canada yesterday. Even if you’re not a hockey fan, if you tuned into that game you would not have been been disappointed. It had everything you want to see in a game. Hitting, speed, goals, great goal tending, well at least by Ryan Miller. Broduer… not so much. It was the type of game that may get more Americans to start paying attention to hockey. I don’t know how any American supporters could not have enjoyed that game yesterday. Ryan Kesler’s, who plays in Vancouver for the Canucks during the NHL season, scored quite possibly the greatest empty net goal I have ever seen. He out hustled Corey Perry to the puck and used his left arm to backhand the puck in the net from about 45 feet away. I don’t think the Canadians were prepared for the speed and toughness displayed by the Americans.

The Americans, who finished 1st out of 12 nations in the preliminary rounds, now will face must win situations from here on out to advance for a chance at a medal.

FeBOREary

February is the slowest time of the year in the sports world. The NFL just ended, MLB is still yet to start (a sport which may have been just invented so there is something to do during the football offseason), the NBA is its usual non-competitive self since everybody already knows either the Lakers or Cavs are gonna win The Finals unless somehow the Celtics or Nuggets go nuts, and the NHL is on its Olympic break.

Thankfully however, it is indeed an Olympic year. Just like the World Cup, it gives me a reason to watch a sport I normally wouldn’t care about except for every four years. The Olympics showcase some of the greatest athletes in the world, at sports that are rarely glorified. I can’t imagine the endurance it takes to cross country ski 12.5 kilometers, and stopping four times along the way and being able to keep a steady hand while exhausted to hit five targets 160 ft away that are the size of a half dollar. The freestyle skiing events hurt my knees just by watching them. The downhill skiing events have participants flying down the mountain at speeds I could never imagine and the crashes are intense. All these athletes in the games, except maybe curling, have incredible strength and athleticism, most of which we only get to enjoy every four years.

I get into all the sports during the Olympics. I’ve even been caught watching Curling.

Free!

Just had a free grand slam from Denny’s as advertised during the Super Bowl commercials. The place was packed, but I was in and out in about a half hour, and am now full and satisfied.

Super Results

Well if you listened to me and took the Saints you’d be a few bucks richer.

However, if you listened to me and took the over or the Colts winning outcome you’d be broke.

I’m glad to see New Orleans win after all that city as been through. Also, now I can say I played high school football with a Super Bowl champion.

Super Prediction

Its the Friday before the Super Bowl and as the resident NFL addict, I feel obligated to make a prediction on the game.

First let’s cover the gambling aspect:

Indianapolis is 4.5 pt favorites right now, so If I was going to be on the game, I’d take New Orleans getting the 4.5 pts. The Colts have the fire power to blow anybody out that they want, however most of their games this season ended by them winning by no more than a touchdown. With the weapons the Saints have on offense, look for them to always be in the game and at least keeping it close.

The over/under is 56.5 pts. This seems like a no-brainer. With potent offenses and suspect defenses on both teams, the safe bet is definitely the over. It wouldn’t surprise me though if the defense stepped up in this game. Robert Mathis can put pressure on Drew Brees to force him into a bad decision, and Darren Sharper is one of the best ball hawks in the game and may be able to snatch an errant Peyton Manning pass out of the air. But if I had to, I’d go with the over.

As for the game itself:

Colts 31, Saints 28.

I hope I’m wrong since I’ll be rooting for the Saints, but the Colts were almost perfect for a reason this season. They appear to be doing everything right, and I believe they’ll have just enough to edge out a close victory on Sunday.

Party time…excellent

Imagine what a party it’ll be in New Orleans from Sunday until Mardi Gras if the Saints happen to win the Super Bowl… Good for that city, geaux Saints!
